giving back

The Cocoon Shelter

In November of 2010, I became a member of the Board of Directors for The Cocoon Shelter, a domestic violence shelter that serves Wood County, Ohio and surrounding areas. The shelter serves victims of domestic violence and their children in need of emergency safe housing. The vision is to be a trusted partner, community leader and transforming voice in Wood County and surrounding areas, committed to ending domestic violence and empowering those affected by it.

Facts:

At least 3 women are killed daily in the U.S. by their husbands or boyfriends.

It is the leading cause of injury in 15-44 year old women, more than car accidents,
muggings & rapes combined.

Women who leave their batterers are at a 75% greater risk of being killed by the
batterer than those who stay.

44% of homicides in Wood County were domestic violence homicides compared to 9% nationally.

It's a big deal

This is why The Cocoon Shelter is so important for the Wood County community. I started up a Facebook and Twitter page that announces events, facts and information. In hard economic times, they need more help than ever. I helped launch a new website, which now enables online donations. I was also on the fund development committee.

Even though I never met the residents; in the time I was a part of this remarkable shelter, giving back was an incredible experience.
